Nightmares On Wax vs Adrian Sherwood – You Bliss

George Evelyn (DJ E.A.S.E.) handed the master tapes of Nightmares On Wax’s 2006 album “In A Space Outta Sound” to dub producer Adrian Sherwood for a complete reimagining. “In A Space Outta Dub,” out April 3 via On-U Sound and Warp Records, transforms eight tracks through Sherwood’s mixing desk techniques and sound system approach.

“You Bliss” reworks the original “You Wish” with bass-driven dub production and fresh instrumentation from On-U Sound players including Doug Wimbish (Living Colour, Tackhead) on bass, Mark Bandola (Ausgang) on guitar, Cyrus Richards (Rasites) on keys, and Dave Fulwood (Abassi All Stars) on trumpet. The track samples the 1968 soul classic “Private Number” by Judy Clay and William Bell.

Sherwood’s approach goes beyond remixing—he strips back rhythm tracks, applies his trademark effects manipulation, and records new overdubs with core collaborators. “Flip Ya Lid” becomes “Flippin Eck,” each track taking on new weight and atmosphere while respecting the reggae and sound system influences that informed the original album.

The collaboration follows the lineage of classic dub reinterpretations like Massive Attack’s “No Protection” and Spoon’s “Lucifer On The Moon.” Evelyn grew up with West Yorkshire’s reggae culture of homemade speaker boxes and heavy rhythms on imported 12-inches, influences he’s revisited throughout his career including on last year’s “Echo45 Sound System” mixtape.

The 20th anniversary celebration includes a triple-vinyl box set pairing the original double album with the eight-track dub companion, designed by Ruff Mercy (Gorillaz, Run The Jewels) with glow-in-the-dark print and cut-out speaker box. Nightmares On Wax performs a sold-out Royal Albert Hall show March 12, celebrating both “In A Space Outta Sound” and the 30th anniversary of “Smokers Delight” with full live band, string quartet, choir, and guest vocalists.
